In today’s world of increased fuel costs, increased insurance and increased inflation, it is more important than ever for the modern transport business to look for new ways of reducing costs wherever possible.
The windscreen has long been viewed as a cheap item with very little thought given to it. Changes in design and technology, such as heated windscreens, direct glazing , rain sensors and more curved designs mean that the cost of windscreens are rising. It is also unfortunate that the increase in potholes in the roads over the last two years means more loose stones on the road and so an increased chance of windscreen damage. Windscreen repair (Think preventative maintenance for glass) is a simple process where small stone chips are filled with an Ultra Violet light curing resin. The resin, when cured, restores strength to the damaged glass, restores most of the optical performance to the damaged area and is a permanent repair. The main advantages of repair are speed and cost savings. A repair can be carried out in 20 to 30 minutes and because it uses UV curing resin, the vehicle can be driven immediately after repair. The material cost of the repair is about £2.00 per job, a significant saving over replacement. The Esprit system has passed the British Standards test BS AU 251:1994. In this test the repairs produced by the system are subjected to a range of tests for strength, optical performance and durability. These tests are based on the same tests given to new windscreens under European rule EC43 The latest Esprit repair equipment has been designed for ease of use; the main skill sets required being patience and observation. The cost of the kit includes one days training at the Esprit training centre in Newcastle under Lyme in Staffordshire. In one recent case, one of our customers was running a nationwide fleet of delivery vehicles (Mostly full sized articulated units) from a number of UK depots. Their annual glass spend was £85,000 (Self-insured) and they were looking to reduce this by carrying out in-house repairs. After a three month test at one depot, they have now equipped the rest of the network. For those concerned with green issues, windscreen repair has a much smaller carbon footprint than that of windscreen replacement. The energy required to melt the glass to make the replacement windscreen added to the energy required to re-cycle the damaged unit plus the energy required to move the relatively large heavy glass to warehouses and then onto site is much greater than that required for repair.
