 BRI-FLEX is a unique high containment double-sided barrier system now available for installation
The BRI-FLEX H2 W5 double sided Vehicle Restraint System has been developed to give a high degree of impact safety for central reserve /median applications. BRI-FLEX has been fully tested to the requirements of the European Standard EN1317 and has a Highways Agency ‘acceptance for use’ on the UK Motorway and Trunk Road Network.
Unique system
Developed by Hill & Smith Ltd., the UK’s leading road barrier manufacturer, this unique system is the integration of BRIFEN wire rope, woven around the tops of the support posts above the Flexbeam steel rails.
With a system working width classification of W4, along with a vehicle intrusion of W5, its system width of only 835 mm facilitates its use on narrow central reserve medians. Data and experience gained from the development of a variety of different vehicle restraint systems has resulted in the BRI-FLEX system achieving an impact severity level (formally known as ASI) of class A, achieving the lowest (and hence safest) classification for impacting vehicles and therefore providing a higher level of protection in comparison to other solid concrete/ rigid systems that are only ASI class B.
The BRI-FLEX system effectively prohibits the posts deflecting excessively on impact, delivering a system stiff enough to contain heavier EN1317 H2 classification vehicles whilst retaining the elasticity needed to absorb impact and minimise the severity of impact to occupants of smaller vehicles whilst still allowing snow and other debris to pass through rather than building up on the side of the highway.
BRI-FLEX provides highway agencies with a viable and cost effective alternative to concrete barrier, particularly in high volume traffic areas.
It’s too new to provide an installation case study, but BRI-FLEX is currently being installed within the UK; we hope to be able to follow this up later in the year.
