Hydrogen & Fuel Cells for Clean Cities
Tony McNally, Managing Director, Climate Change Solutions Ltd

ImageThis conference on 25 March 2010 proposes that Hydrogen and Fuel Cells can make a major contribution to that commitment in providing better vehicles and buildings for Clean Cities.

Currently, the UK government is committed to a substantial increase in renewable energy use over the next decade as a major part of its programme to reduce carbon emissions (by 80% in 2050). The use of hydrogen and fuel cells, in conjunction with renewable and other low carbon sources of energy, provides a significant part of the solution to this challenge. Over recent years, the fuel cell industry has received a lot of interest, as fuel cells are zero-emission devices with higher efficiencies than competing technologies. Demand for them is expected to increase well into the 21st century: latest projections estimate that the global fuel cell industry will be a £multi-billion market within the next few years.

Hydrogen offers a unparalleled energy currency that simultaneously provides smart management of low carbon electricity networks, while providing a clean fuel for transport and other uses. Thus it enables heat, power and transport sectors to ‘symbiotically’ decarbonise by converting the grid balancing and energy storage problem into a revenue generating opportunity.
