£2.9 million to improve station access for disabled passengers |
42 railway stations to get improvements including ramps and accessible toilets.
£2.9 million Government funding will see 42 railway stations become more accessible for disabled passengers.
Funding from the Government's Access for All Small Schemes initiative will pay for a range of works including the installation of footbridges, accessible toilets, ramps and handrails.
The announcement includes the provision of a new computer booking system to make it easier to reserve assistance for disabled passengers and the installation of new footbridges at Witham Station in Essex, Thornaby Station in Stockton-on-Tees and Barry Island Station in Wales.
Rail Minister Chris Mole said: "We have seen an unprecedented growth in rail passengers over the last decade and that's why the Government is funding more carriages, better stations and faster, more efficient services.
"It's vital that all passengers benefit from this growth and that they're able to travel around the rail network with ease. The works announced will help disabled passengers, the elderly and parents with pushchairs and people carrying heavy bags."
