International trade fair for transport technology – innovative components, vehicles, and systems at InnoTrans 2010

It is all happening again on 21 September 2010: the leading international trade fair for railway technology reveals the future of mobility. The unique concept of this event is being retained in 2010, with the trade fair, convention and exhibition on the rail tracks. Satisfied exhibitors and growing attendance figures offer convincing proof: 85,592 trade visitors at InnoTrans, 33 per cent more than at the previous event. A record number of exhibitors were represented, too, 1,914 companies from 41 countries. A survey of exhibitors and trade visitors revealed that 96.2 per cent of visitors obtained a positive overall impression of InnoTrans. As a multidisciplinary trade fair focusing on rail transport, InnoTrans 2010 shows the way for the mobility of the future.

Focus on railway technology
With a large number of reference projects and over 220 transport technology firms, Berlin is the main focus of Germany’s transport engineering industry and an ideal venue for InnoTrans, an international platform for buyers and sellers of passenger and freight transport technology. InnoTrans has become established as an international industry showplace focusing on railway technology. A full range of rail vehicles are presented in static displays on the Messe Berlin tracks located outside the exhibition halls. Other key InnoTrans features include Railway Infrastructure, Interiors, Public Transport and Tunnel Construction.

The InnoTrans Convention taking place in conjunction with the trade show includes a special Dialogue Forum sponsored by the Deutsches Verkehrsforum (German Transport Forum), Verband Deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen (VDV, Association of German Transport Companies), the Verband der europäischen Schienenverkehrsindustrie (UNIFE, European Rail Transport Industry Association), and the Verbande der Bahnindustrie in Deutschland (VDB, German Rail Industry Association). Initiated and organised by the Deutsche Bahn AG, the European and Asian Rail Summit (EARS) offers excellent dialogue opportunities for transport ministries and general managers of central European and Asian rail transport companies.

Accompanying the Tunnel Construction segment, the Studiengesellschaft für unterirdische Verkehrsanlagen e.V. (STUVA, Incorporated Association for Underground Transport Systems) will lead round-table discussions titled “International Tunnel Forum” at the InnoTrans Convention.

Innovations in the open air
The display on the open air grounds is a feature unique to InnoTrans. The 3,500 linear metres of rail track provide a direct link with the exhibition halls and the national rail network. All the industry‘s innovations will be on display, from construction and road-rail vehicles to freight rolling stock and locomotives, as well as entire local, regional and long-distance transport systems.

Products on display

A modern network that is maintained in accordance with requirements is the prerequisite for safe, punctual and efficient rail operations, thereby ensuring a high standard of reliability. Railway Infrastructure is the section devoted to transport developments of every kind: demands for improved quality and technologies that transcend national boundaries form the basis for the innovative development of railway infrastructure. This is the world‘s largest and leading meeting place for the industry, and the exchange of ideas and information on topics such as track technology, construction work, signalling and control systems form the basis for the lasting success of the railways.

Railway Technology, the largest section at InnoTrans, turns the spotlight on the advances being made on the rails. Components and systems, from drives to vehicle maintenance: a comprehensive and representative picture of products and innovations from the entire rail industry will be provided.

The expanding Interiors section offers plenty of scope for established suppliers and for newcomers to present innovative developments in their search for new sales markets. The combination of comfort, safety and outstanding design are essential for ensuring the mobility of the future. The display encompasses user-friendly operating systems and interior trims, equipment suitable for the disabled, pinch-protection systems and lighting.

Public Transport has to cope with high volumes while maintaining good quality standards, and these aspects are dealt with in a very effective way at this trade fair. A comprehensive picture of the public transport sector is provided, including information technology in the form of passenger information systems and data processing, security systems and fare management, as well as all the various services involved in passenger transport. Since 2008 this subject has been augmented by presentations of buses for local and regional routes.

The subject matter of the specialist Tunnel Construction section creates synergies with railway Infrastructure, and the new hall layout at InnoTrans plays an important part in this process. The short distances between the various displays and the shared interests of the participants under one roof create the ideal conditions for finding out about new developments in areas such as tunnelling machinery and technology, ventilation systems, engineering services, tunnel extension, safety systems and many other aspects.

Dialogue with the future
Leading international decision makers from industry, transport and politics will be engaging in an interdisciplinary dialogue. With high-level panel discussions the InnoTrans Convention is an ideal opportunity for discussions with a current and future relevance to the subject of mobility. The Convention is based around the Dialogue Forum, which is being organised by the leading associations: German Transport forum, VdV (Association of German Transport Companies), uNIfE (Association of the European rail Industry) and Vdb (German railway Industry Association). The European and Asian Rail Summit (EARS) invites transport ministers and the chief executives of European and Asian transport companies to join in the discussions. The International Tunnel Forum, organised by STuVA (German research Association for underground Transportation), will accompany the Tunnel Construction section. The Public Transport Forum, organised by the Transport planning office (pbV) and ETC Consultants GmbH, will focus its dialogue on the future challenges facing public transport.

Worldwide rail market study

The third edition of the worldwide market study of the rail industry will be launched at this year’s InnoTrans. It is published by UNIFE, the European rail industry, in cooperation with The Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

Based on a survey conducted in the 50 largest rail markets worldwide, the study provides an update on the installed base and market volumes. Unique market growth predictions are displayed for the short-term and 2020 time horizon per product segment (infrastructure, rolling stock, rail control, services and project integration) and regions (Western/ Eastern Europe, Asia/Pacific, NAFTA, Africa/Middle East, CIS).

On top of that, the UNIFE Worldwide Rail Market Study elaborates strategic conclusions for the industry and reflects on market developments taking into account the impact of the economic downturn and several possible political and economic scenarios. It is the largest study of its kind and a major reference for the rail community.
