Potholes are back
ImageNow that the winter’s big freeze is out of the way, what are we left with? You’ve guessed, it’s potholes, lots of them, all over the place.

Unfortunately, it is to be expected. The freeze/thaw cycle of recent months has allowed water to penetrate the asphalt and as it freezes it expands. This action, regrettably, does a great job of breaking up the road surface. The cold snap in February 2009, for example, was reported to have caused a 40 per cent increase in road damage.

Councils across the country are warning of a significant increase in the number of potholes caused by the cold snap. This pales into insignificance, however, to the pothole repair backlog that already exists. A report by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) claims that there is an estimated 13-year repair backlog in England and 15.6 years in Wales. Apparently, even before this cold winter there was one pothole (on average) for every 120 yards of UK road. But now comes the job of starting to put matters right.

Even though our roads (potholes included) are likely to remain wet, with low temperatures at night time (two factors that usually annul the use of pothole repair materials) fortunately there is an answer. It is ‘REphalt’, the permanent cold applied pothole repair material from Prismo Traffic Products.

REphalt, which is HAPAS accredited and fully approved for use on the UK’s highways is water activated, shrinkage free and can be trafficked immediately after application.

Manufactured from renewable resources, REphalt also provides significant environmental benefits. Whilst it has similar properties to conventional asphalt, it is totally solvent free and as such, does not emit unwanted vapours into the atmosphere. In addition, it takes just one visit to create a permanent repair, thus avoiding landfill disposal charges for previously failed materials.
