Rural motorists and haulage firms last night welcomed an investigation into sky-high fuel prices.
In January, the Observer reported how drivers were paying around 3p more for petrol than people in other nearby towns and cities
The Office of Fair Trading will investigate unfair competition at the pumps and the operations of the fuel market - worth £32 billion a year - amid widespread concerns over the soaring costs of petrol and diesel.
While oil prices have dropped, this has not been reflected at the pumps where petrol costs have risen 38 per cent, and diesel 43 per cent, since July 2007.
