Japan now has more car charging points than gas stations

It has been reported in Japan that there are now 40,000 charging points compared to 34,000 gas stations in the country.

The figures have been reported by Nissan and have shown that in the time since electric vehicles were introduced in the country not too long ago, the infrastructure to support them has become bigger than what the oil industry built over decades, according to news reports.
Many of those charging stations are in private homes, however, whereas a typical fuel station can serve a far greater number of vehicles.

Nissan is looking at the growing demand for electric cars, while competitor Toyota said it has been swamped by orders for its first mass market hydrogen fuel-cell car, the Mirai sedan.

Charging stations are becoming more prevalent, with companies like Tesla recently announcing it will start setting up free charging stations all over China to expand the market.

It is expected there will be at least 1 million electric vehicles on the road worldwide by 2016.
