A multi million-pound transport scheme in Grimsby has been approved by councillors.
Work is now scheduled to begin in Spring 2013 with Station Approach being the first scheme on the ground, closely followed by Riverhead Square. It is hoped in addition to transport improvements, both schemes will provide high quality paving and street furniture to boost the appearance and stimulate interest in the town centre.
Councillor Peter Wheatley, portfolio holder for regeneration and environment, said: "This is terrific news for Grimsby and North East Lincolnshire and will help draw in more visitors and improve prospects for local shops and other outlets in the area. It shows we mean business and are open for business in Grimsby.''
"The funding we received has allowed us to design a number of significant improvements to the public and sustainable transport networks, which will help to encourage development, create jobs and improve levels of accessibility.''
As well as providing the physical improvements in the town centre, there are several objectives associated with the delivery of the Local Sustainable Transport Fund - these include a travel voucher scheme to support the unemployed back to work, a community led 'Wheels to Work' scheme to overcome the barriers to employment, a 'Move More' scheme to promote active travel to work and school and the promotion of an on line car sharing scheme.
Other than government incentives, auto manufacturers are seeking to drum up buyers' interest with value-added services.
